We Are Aliens

Are we alone in the universe? It's one of the oldest questions in astronomy, whether there is life elsewhere in the universe. In this presentation, join narrator Rupert Grint on an exploration of the possibility of life in our solar system and beyond. Today we turn our scientific tools toward the heavens to get a new perspective of the universe and our place in it. Take a journey through time, from the most ancient astrologers, to the future of manned exploration of the solar system and see how our view of the cosmos has grown and evolved.

LAZERDOME - Rush 2112
7:00 pm
Over forty years ago the three prophets of Rush foretold an intergalactic war on their prog-rock album, 2112. They predicted that in the year 2062, the universe will finally find peace — and oppression — as the Solar Federation unifies warring planets and instates the music-hating Priests of the Temples of Syrinx as overlords. Everything will change, however, in 2112 when an optimistic free-thinker finds a “strange musical device” and martyrs himself while attempting to bring melody to the stars.
Track List:
2112, Overture, The Temples of Syrinx, Discovery, Presentation, Oracle: The Dream, Soliloquy, Grand Finale, A Passage to Bangkok, The Twilight Zone, Lessons, Tears, Something for Nothing

Dr. Marie Lau - April 25
Exploring Quasars: The Brightest Lights in the Universe
Quasars, the brightest known objects in the distant universe, offer extraordinary insights into the lives of galaxies and the supermassive black holes hidden within them. In this talk, we journey through cosmic time to explore quasars—galactic centers shining intensely due to supermassive black holes devouring material from their surroundings. Using large telescopes equipped with advanced imaging and spectroscopy, astronomers now also study reddened quasars which are enshrouded in dust and reveal hidden processes that shape galaxies. We'll discover how quasars serve as "cosmic flashlights," illuminating the secrets of galaxy evolution, from feeding and growing galaxies to powerful winds that influence their future.
Reception: 6pm
Talk: 7pm, followed by a Q&A session.
Admission is free, but seats in the Dome Theater are limited. Seating is on a first come, first served basis, and the dome theater can only accommodate 124 people. The first 124 guests will be given a wristband for entry. Reservations are encouraged but not required.
